Theo is an 11 month old mixed breed dog. He was rescued from the island of Aruba, where there local dogs are known as the "Cunucu" breed. He is neutered, up to date on his shots/tests, and at last vet visit around 40-45 pounds full size.
Theo was found with his 11 siblings after their mom was hit by a car and moved into foster care. There, they treated him for malnutrition, dehydration, and removed all the ticks and fleas he was covered in. He made a full recovery and was healthy enough to travel, but due to his rough start he's still overcoming a fear of cars (travels well, but scared to walk too closely by one if it's running).
He's come a long way with the help of some training and is a loving boy. He knows how to sit and down on command. He's getting better at heel during walks. He has come a long way with crate training (being along and no accidents for longer durations). He's also very good motivated which helps. He's at his happiest when he's by your side. He loves to sit outside and go on walks, but has a medium energy and is just as happy to be in with a toy or treat to play with.
He's currently living with two female dogs that are old and larger than him. He's done okay with them so far, but due to his upbringing would thrive in a different environment. He is working on his tendency to resource guard and feel safe. During his previous foster care and time in boarding/training, he'd do well in an environment with a strong alpha to help continue the good work he has done and make him feel safe. Due to a tendency to get jealous, he'd likely due better in a home without dogs. He's never had any issues of aggression, no biting, and plays well with his sisters when watched. He does share water and can take treats next to them but does get fed separately as he finished first and then will want there's too. He's also working on his barking and we're now trying the beep-vibrate auto collar which is going well since his bark can sound intimidating (he's just got a big voice in a little body) and his vet is trying a new medication to help with his anxiety (new people, being left out or alone)

Every animal that comes into the CARA program is here because one or more events occurred  that led to this animal needing not only a home, but a person or family to love and protect them. Each animal has been loved and cared for by a small and determined group of people who want nothing more than to know each animal is safe for the rest of his or her life. Thank you for looking to adopt!
