CARA is Born

In 2003, San-Lee Humane Society evolved into Carolina Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA) after separating from Lee County to become a non-profit, no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. Since this time CARA has received no county of government funding. But the story does not end there.

CARA continues to find loving forever homes for animals and is committed to a no-kill philosophy. It takes the dedication, generosity, caring and support of the community to allow CARA to do what it does. Since 2003 CARA has found homes for thousands of dogs and cats. Animals have been rehomed as far north as Vermont and as far south as Florida.

CARA has hosted countless community groups at the shelter as well as given humane education presentations at local schools and organizations.

As said before, CARA gets no money from the state, government, county. The organization has received some grants over the years but not many – our operating expenses are paid via donations and fundraising. And we cannot forget the thousands of hours of volunteer labor gifted to us by CARA’s animal loving friends.
